A two-post lift is one of the best returns on investment a workshop can make. It is also the single piece of equipment most likely to be installed badly — usually because the floor, the power supply or the ceiling height were checked after the lift arrived rather than before.
None of these checks are complicated. They just have to happen in the right order.
1. The floor comes first
Everything a two-post lift does is transferred into your slab through the anchor bolts. If the concrete is not up to the job, nothing else matters.
Industry guidance and lift manufacturers converge on a similar baseline: a minimum of roughly 100 mm (4 inches) of reinforced concrete with a compressive strength of at least 3 000 psi (about 20 MPa), fully cured, level, and free of cracks or expansion joints in the anchor area. Many suppliers recommend going thicker where you can.
Commonly cited minimum reinforced slab thickness for a two-post lift, at a minimum 3 000 psi compressive strength. Thicker is better — and your specific lift's manual always overrides general guidance.

Before you order
Core-drill or otherwise confirm your actual slab depth. Do not assume. Workshops in converted buildings very often have a thinner slab than the original plans suggest, and finding out on installation day is expensive.
What disqualifies a floor
- Slab thinner than the manufacturer's stated minimum
- An expansion joint or crack running through the anchor footprint
- Newly poured concrete that has not fully cured
- Significant slope — lifts need a level base to raise a load squarely
- Post-tensioned slabs, which need specialist assessment before any drilling
If the floor fails, the fix is usually a reinforced pad poured specifically for the lift. That is a normal, solvable job — as long as you know about it beforehand.
2. Height and clearance
Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the roof apex. Beams, ducting, lighting and roller-door tracks all count.
You need clearance for the lift structure itself, plus the tallest vehicle you intend to raise, plus room to open its doors and bonnet at height. Also plan the working envelope around the posts — a lift you cannot walk around comfortably slows every job that goes on it.
3. Power supply
Check what the lift needs against what your workshop actually has. Larger two-post lifts commonly run on three-phase supply, and a single-phase workshop will need either a different model or an electrical upgrade. Confirm:
- Single-phase or three-phase, and the required voltage
- Motor rating and the breaker size it demands
- Where the isolator will sit relative to the control post
- Cable routing that will not be driven over or damaged
4. Installation and commissioning
- Confirm the slab and the exact anchor positions against the manufacturer's template.
- Set and plumb the posts. Both must be truly vertical — a lift that is out of plumb wears unevenly and lifts unsafely.
- Torque the anchors to specification. Not "tight". To the stated figure.
- Synchronise the carriages so both sides rise and lock together.
- Test under load through the full travel, checking the locks engage at every position.
5. Then keep it safe
A lift is a lifting appliance. Treat it like one. Daily visual checks on cables, chains, arm locks and hydraulic connections take under a minute. Beyond that, a documented periodic inspection by a competent person — and keeping that record — is what protects your staff and your business.
The lift is not the expensive part. Discovering your floor cannot take it, on the morning it arrives, is the expensive part.

Check the slab, then the height, then the power — in that order, and before you place the order. Get the anchors torqued properly and the posts plumb. Then inspect it regularly. Do those things and a good two-post lift will earn its keep quietly for years.
