Almost every hay problem we hear about traces back to one number: moisture at the moment of baling. Bale too wet and the stack heats, moulds, loses feed value and — in the worst cases — catches fire. Bale too dry and the leaf shatters, taking the protein with it.
The good news is that the target ranges are well established. The difficulty is hitting them consistently in a Limpopo season where the weather rarely cooperates.
The numbers worth memorising
Bale density is the key variable. A dense bale holds heat and moisture in the middle, so the bigger and tighter the bale, the drier the crop needs to be going in.
Safe baling moisture for dry hay: roughly 18–20% for small rectangular bales, dropping to around 15% for large, hard-core round bales. Heating occurs to some extent in anything above about 15% moisture.

Baleage can be made between 40% and 60% moisture, but fermentation is best at 50–60%. Wrap immediately, or within 12 hours of baling — delay allows heating and microbial activity that costs you feed value.

In legumes especially, the leaf carries most of the protein and digestible energy. Bale too dry and that leaf shatters and falls out on the field. You end up with a heavier proportion of stem — bulk without the nutrition.
This is why cutting later in the morning, once the dew has lifted but before the crop is bone dry, so often produces better feed than a late-afternoon rush.

Field test, then verify
The twist test tells you roughly where you are: twist a handful of stems and if they break cleanly with no moisture at the break, you are close. But "roughly" is how wet bales happen — a moisture meter costs a fraction of one spoiled stack.
Matching the machine to the job
Round balers
Efficient, fast and well suited to larger areas and outdoor storage, because the shape sheds water. Hard-core round bales demand the driest crop of any format.
Square balers
Stack and transport far more efficiently, and suit shed storage and smaller handling equipment. Small rectangular bales tolerate slightly higher moisture than large round ones.
Wrappers
A wrapper turns the whole equation around. Instead of chasing a dry window, you bale wet and seal the bale. In an unpredictable season that flexibility is often worth more than the machine costs.
A workable routine
- Cut when the weather window is real, not when you hope it will be.
- Condition and spread the swath wide to dry the crop evenly rather than just the top.
- Test moisture in the swath, in several places, before you start baling.
- Bale in the right part of the day — usually once dew has lifted, and stopping before the crop gets too dry.
- Monitor the stack for the first two to three weeks. Heat means trouble, and early is when you can still act.
The most expensive bale on any farm is the one that has to be thrown away — and it almost always looked fine on the day it was made.
